Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Zagreb

Arrive at any time. After settling into your hotel, attend a welcome meeting in the evening with your CEO before heading out to see some of Zagreb's nearby sights en route to one of the city's Christmas Markets. Soak up the festive atmosphere and continue onwards for an optional dinner with the group.

  • Day 2

    Zagreb

Today is yours to explore. Discover Zagreb's many shops, museums and parks or visit some of the more than 25 Christmas markets spread across the city. Check out the different themes and bask in the jolly atmosphere in Croatia's lively capital. Welcome to Zagreb, the vibrant, culturally rich capital of Croatia known for historic palaces and cathedrals, a diverse culinary scene, and open air markets.

  • Day 3

    Zagreb/Ljubljana

Enjoy a free morning in Zagreb for any last-minute sightseeing before boarding a train and travelling onward to Ljubljana, Slovenia. Settle in before exploring the town on foot with your CEO, ending at the local Christmas Market. Ljubljana was named the European Green Capital in 2016 and boasts a mix of Baroque, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco architecture, nestled amongst lush green hills. Enjoy architect Jože Plečnik's vision, through picturesque bridges and the impressive Central Market

  • Day 4

    Ljubljana/Graz

Bid farewell to Ljubljana this morning before boarding a train to Graz, Austria. Set out with your CEO for a short orientation walk en route to the oldest Christmas Market in the area, surrounding the Franciscan church. Enjoy the Styrian arts and crafts, regional farm products, and hot punch and continue to another market in front of City Hall to see the beautiful Christmas tree and merry-go-round. The remainder of the day is free to continue exploring or try out a local restaurant for dinner. Graz is a charming and relatively undiscovered Austrian town where stunning Christmas markets await. At its heart is Hauptplatz, the medieval old town’s main square. Shops and restaurants line the narrow surrounding streets, which blend Renaissance and baroque architecture. A funicular leads up Schlossberg, the town hill, to the Uhrturm, a centuries-old clock tower. Across the River Mur, futuristic Kunsthaus Graz exhibits contemporary. If you're looking to shop, Eiserne Tor is the right place to be. This market is run exclusively by local charity organizations and the proceeds go to selected charity projects.

  • Day 5

    Graz/Budapest

Climb aboard a train and travel across another border into Hungary, through the countryside to Budapest. After some time to settle in to the hotel, set off with your CEO on foot and by public transport to see some of the city's most iconic and historic landmarks. Finish off at the local Christmas markets in the evening and enjoy the rest of the evening at leisure.

  • Day 6

    Budapest

Today is yours to discover Budapest on your own. Perhaps return to the Christmas Markets, visit the halls of the famous Parliament, take a walk around the Fisherman's Bastion, or take a boat cruise along the Danube. Regroup in the evening for an optional final dinner with the group.

Frequently asked questions

  • What are the main highlights of this Christmas tour?

You will visit some of Europe's oldest and most iconic Christmas markets, travel by train across four different countries, and enjoy free time in Zagreb and Budapest for individual exploration, all while seeing Eastern Europe in its festive glory.
  • What kind of accommodation can I expect on this trip?

You can expect to stay in small, family-run hotels or pensions (with the exception of the start and finish hotels, which are often larger city hotels). These accommodations are locally-run, have traditional character, are in excellent central locations, and are clean, safe, and simple. The tour includes 6 nights in hotels.
  • What meals are included during the tour?

Six breakfasts are included in this trip.
  • What are the primary modes of transportation used on this trip?

Intercity transport will primarily be by local train. Other modes include private vehicle, public transport, taxi, and walking. Please note that public transport can sometimes involve delays.
  • How large will the tour group be?

The maximum group size is 16 travellers, with an average of 12.
  • Is there an extra cost for solo travellers?

Our group trips are designed for shared accommodation and do not involve a single supplement. Single travellers are paired in twin or multi-share accommodation with someone of the same sex. If you book the 'My Own Room' option, you will receive your own single room for all night stops, though these may be smaller than double-occupancy rooms.
  • Is travel insurance required for this trip?

Yes, travel insurance is compulsory. You must have medical coverage with a minimum of USD 200,000 for repatriation and emergency rescue. Coverage for personal liability, cancellation, curtailment, and lost luggage and personal effects is strongly recommended. Your CEO will require evidence of insurance.
  • Is tipping customary or expected on this trip?

Tipping is customary in Europe and is an expected, though not compulsory, component of your tour. For wait staff, a general rule is 10% of the bill, and a smaller amount (€1 or €2) for other service providers. For local guides, recommendations range from €6-8 per day. For your CEO, €30-€40 per person, per week is a guideline if you felt they did an outstanding job.
  • What optional activities are available in Budapest?

Optional activities in Budapest include a Buda Castle Visit (1500HUF), Thermal Baths Visit (5700HUF), Hungarian National Museum (3500HUF), and Parliament Building Visit (7000HUF).
  • What should I know about safety and security on this trip?

We recommend checking your government's travel advice. Use a neck wallet or money belt for valuables and consider leaving valuable jewellery at home. Many hotels have safety deposit boxes, and a lock is recommended for luggage. Your CEO can amend the itinerary for safety reasons and will accompany you on included activities. During free time, use good judgment, stay in small groups at night, and consider taxis for night excursions. Illegal drugs are not tolerated, and exploitation in the sex trade is against our travel philosophy.
  • What happens if I experience problems upon arrival?

If you are unable to commence your trip as scheduled, please contact your starting hotel as soon as possible, requesting to speak to or leave a message for your CEO. If you cannot reach your CEO, please refer to the emergency contact details provided in your tour dossier.
  • What is the Planeterra Foundation?

Planeterra International Foundation is a non-profit organization committed to turning travel into impact by helping local communities earn an income from tourism. They develop and support small community-owned businesses globally, integrating their projects into our itineraries. We are Planeterra’s largest corporate donor, covering all operating costs, so 100% of your donation will bring opportunity to people in need.
  • When can I do laundry during the trip?

Laundry facilities are offered by some of our hotels for a charge. There will be times when you may want to or have to do your own laundry, so we suggest you bring non-polluting/biodegradable soap.
  • Who will be leading the group on this tour?

A CEO (Chief Experience Officer) will lead the group throughout the tour.
  • Are international flights included in the tour price?

No, international flights are generally not included in the price of your tour. However, on some combo tours traveling between two different countries, international flights are included. Please speak to your GCO or booking agent for further details.
  • Are there any health considerations for this trip?

Inoculations may be required for the countries visited. It is your responsibility to consult with your travel doctor for up-to-date medical travel information well before departure. We recommend carrying a First Aid kit, hand sanitizers/antibacterial wipes, and any personal medical requirements. Please be aware that in remote areas, medical facilities may be limited, and our leaders are prohibited from administering drugs. The tour operator reserves the right to exclude any traveller unable to complete the itinerary without undue risk to themselves or the group.
  • How much emergency money should I bring?

Please ensure you have access to at least an additional USD $200 (or equivalent) as an 'emergency' fund, to be used if unforeseen circumstances (e.g., natural disaster) require a change to our planned route. This is a rare occurrence.
  • What is the minimum age to join this trip?

You must be 18 to travel unaccompanied on this tour. For minors traveling with a guardian over 21 years old, the minimum age is 12.
  • What should I know about currency and credit cards on this tour?

Credit and debit cards are useful for cash advances, but remember to bring your PIN number (many ATM machines only accept 4-digit PINs). Visa, Cirrus, and Plus system cards are widely accepted, but always check with your bank. A fee usually applies to credit card purchases. Do not rely solely on cards; a combination of local currency and cards is best. Always bring more money than you anticipate needing. Current exchange rates can be found on www.xe.com.
  • Are there specific safety considerations for LGBTQ+ travellers?

The safety and well-being of all our travelers is a priority, including those who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community. We recognize you may have specific concerns and questions and encourage you to visit our LGBTQ+ page for useful resources, including the Equaldex tool, to ensure you feel safe and comfortable throughout your trip.
